Command Staff
The Office of the Fire Chief is responsible for the overall operation and coordination of the department in Planning, Operations, Logistical, and Financial aspects. As mandated by State Law, the Fire Chief acts as the ultimate responsible party at emergency scenes, and in the day-to-day decision making that occurs in the City of Sand Springs.
Normal responsibilities of the Fire Chief's Office include:
- Annual budgeting and purchase approval
- Monthly activity reporting, quality control of incident reports, emergency medical data
collection - Labor relations, personnel management supervision, and discipline
- Training program administration, travel approval, on-shift pre-incident planning and training calendar scheduling
- Customer service, press and media releases, public education
- Command and control of incidents
- Health screening and management of the SSFD's wellness program
- Development and revision of department's standard operating procedures
- Representing the City of Sand Springs and the Fire Department at various committees, conferences and development meetings
- Officer development, promotional screening, on-going personnel evaluations and career development
Fire Chief Mark Joslin
Fire Chief Joslin took the reigns of the Sand Springs Fire Department in 2002. Prior to that he served as Assistant Fire Chief, Training Officer and was a firefighter. He has attended the National Fire Academy, instructed for Oklahoma State University Fire Service Training, and received his formal education from Tulsa Community College. Chief Joslin is well respected both city and statewide, serving on a variety of committees. He currently serves as the Chairman of the City's Emergency Planning Committee, Co-Chairman of the City's Pre-Disaster Mitigation Staff Committee, and is Vice President of the Green Country Fire Chief's Association. He has two daughters, Chelsea and Erin.
Deputy Fire Chief Mike Wood
Mike Wood joined the Sand Springs Fire Department as a firefighter in December 1996. Chief Wood promoted to Deputy Fire Chief, replacing Tom Jenkins effective March 2, 2009. Prior to joining the Sand Springs Fire Department, Wood was a firefighter for the Okmulgee County communities of Liberty and Beggs. He received his education from Northeastern Oklahom A&M College in Miami after graduating from Beggs High School. The responsibilities of this office include emergency response, field operations, project management, and other administrative functions.
Fire Marshal Stan A. Smith
Fire Marshal Stan Smith joined the Sand Springs Fire Department in 1996. He promoted to the rank of Fire Marshal in 2007 after the retirement of Keith Taylor. Stan is a graduate of Oklahoma State University and has completed numerous courses in fire inspection, fire prevention and arson investigation. As a regular student at the National Fire Academy, Stan regularly refines his skills in fire origin and cause determination. Stan's responsibilities include managing the fire prevention function of the fire department, plans review, inspections of new and existing occupancies, arson investigation and juvenile fire-setter intervention. Stan works closely with local businesses and schools to ensure a collaborative effort towards the safety of citizens.
